CAVERSHAM UNITED 2
Joe Hales ⚽️⚽️
Going into the game we knew that Calcot were improving and they wouldn’t roll over, and we really had a battle out there.
We started off trying to go too direct, trying to go Hollywood and despite a disallowed goal and hitting the bar, we couldn’t breakthrough before half time.
We played a lot better in the second half, although it was clear frustration was building and one or two heads did drop. Nevertheless, Joe rounded the keeper to break the deadlock (celebrating his new haircut with a Gaza style dentist chair celebration), before adding a second after some calamitous Calcot defending.
We then hit the bar again and had another goal disallowed. Another day, it could have been more than 2-0 but the three points are what matters, especially with teams near us losing.
MOTM - Joe/ Sam/ Zac

A really disappointing end to our cup run but incredible for us to get there all the same. Beaten by the better team on the day, ultimately.

A 3-0 win and a clean sheet. Not bad. First half we were trying to force the game too much, looking for killer balls every time and going very direct. This didn’t work often but we Joe eventually got the opener after a nice through ball. In the second half we showed a lot more composure, controlled the game and built our chances better. Ben Smith headed in from close range from Conner’s free kick and Joe also chipped in his second with a header.
With three goals for Joe disallowed for offsid in total, this could have been a lot more than 3-0 but we will take it. Big game next weekend!

MOTM: Ben Smith
WOW: Charlie Luffram for stacking it on the sidelines
A very tough game in difficult conditions. The end to end wind made the first half pretty difficult to get the ball clear but we managed to go in 2-1 up at half time. The first was a breakaway goal with Josh slotting past the keeper, before a ridiculous goalmouth scramble following a Wayback corner led to the ball being smashed into the Caversham Net 1-1. Just before the half, Paul netted after prodding home Joe’s flick on. Replays show that a defender got the last touch.
Second half Caversham were more settled and finished off the game, with Joe latching onto a through ball and smashing it past the keeper with 20 minutes to go. A routine win but with results going our way, that could prove important. Onto the next game - where a win is very possible.

What a terrible week. Coley Park Reserves have withdrawn from the league meaning we lost the 6 points we won against them, and also +19 from our goal difference. Tough pill to swallow.
The Game: We were a bit sluggish for the majority of the first half, maybe a Christmas/ New Year hangover. We struggled to get into the game early but Warley didn’t really dominate and it was a cagey first half hour.
However, the Home 9 unlocked us a few times and suddenly it was 3-0, with him completing a hattrick.
3-0 at half time, then Joe Hales missed a penalty in the second. Earley then scored a penalty before Joe scored a consolation goal.
Let this be a wake up call for us. If we want promotion, we would still be second if we win our games in hand. Let’s liven up and get this done!
Best wishes to the Earley player who dislocated his knee. Hope you have a speedy recovery.
MOTM: Matt Webb
WOW: Joe Hales for the penalty that’s still orbiting the sun

OG (1), Josh Thomas (2)
MOTM: Matt Webb (again)
WOW: Tom Outhwaite for turning up late
What can I say!? Conditions were challenging but we prevail again! 7 wins in 8.
1-0 up through an OG that not even man like Joe Hales could claim, but pegged back by Teeth and under the cosh until the half time whistle. Then, on the stroke of half time, we were denied a stonewall penalty. A potential game changing moment?
In the second half, we pressed on and like most games, hit the woodwork. After putting Teeth under constant pressure, with twenty minutes left Josh Thomas popped with a tidy finish into the bottom right corner; in his first game of the season! Then, the little terrier sealed the deal with his second and our third. 3-1!
Up to fifth in the table with a few games in hand, a great end to the year.

1-0 down to a dodgy penalty in the first half and then we had Jack Tapscott sent off..... 2-0 down with ten men and 20 minutes left. But then.. 2 goals from Sam, one penalty and one after a great ball from Joe Hales! 2-2 full time. 3-2 up in extra time thanks to Josh and then Zac pops up with a header from Jacob Fitton’s cross!! They got one back but 4-3 after extra time. Semis here we come!

The game.... they started with 8 but had 11 men by 4-0. Then we stuck another 11 past them.... We didn’t actually play that well but 15-0! Clean sheet (2 in a row) and biggest win in club history. What a week following Friday night’s epic social!

WOW: Sam Bailey Foster for Christmas shopping
A sticky pitch which got progressively worse throughout the game. We started brightly this week with Conner bagging early. We survived a couple of Calcot chances before getting second and third soon after each other. Paul Gutteridge hit a beauty into the top corner and another from a corner into the box. It was 5-0 at the half with Joe Hales getting two before the break.
The second half we were a bit lax and the weather/ conditions were horrible. Difficult to play but Joe eventually got his hat trick.
Carrying on from last week, we hit the crossbar another two times....
Overall though, job done without too much fuss and a clean sheet for the first time this season 🙌

WOW - Daniel Slowe for his horrendous free kick
The winning run ends. Burghfield were 3-0 up within half hour with 2 of those from set pieces. Conner scored to put us back in it and we had a lot of the game and clear chances, but couldn’t convert. Burghfield got a sloppy fourth from a throw in and that was that. We hit the crossbar three times and missed a few sitters. A different day, maybe it would have been a different result. We need to improve on our set piece defending and taking or chances! WE GO AGAIN!

Gaffer’s report: We were flattered slightly in the first half but fully deserved a comprehensive win overall. Sam caught fire early on and we led from 10 minutes through to the end. His first, a one on one. Second, a defender helped his free kick in. His third another neat one on one. The fourth and fifth came in the second half before Conner wrapped up the scoring. Coley did have a go in the early second half and pulled one back, with a nice strike into the top bins. Overall a fair performance but We seemed to forget to pass it around at times. NEXT!
Also a shoutout to our supporter who came to watch us. What a game to pick, hopefully he will be back!

Gaffer’s report: What can I say!? CUFC were 2-0 down inside the first ten minutes to a couple of sloppy goals. This could have had 6/7-0 written all over it. But, not this year. Back to 2-2 by the 20th minute and fully deserved at that. The first goal was Sam rounding the keeper (Fernando Torres in his prime) and Conner with a volley for the second after good work by Josh. It remained 2-2 until the half. Then we kicked on and bossed the game and they didn’t like it one bit. Two more goals, firstly from Josh after dribbling 70 yards and the second from Sam from inside our own half! Goal of the season!? Everyone had a blinder and everyone was MOTM, nobody played poorly at all.
Let’s take this momentum forwards into the cup next week!!
